Energy efficiency helps manufacturers save over NT$8.5 billion a year

The local manufacturing sector has reduced its costs by about NT$8.55 billion (US$269 million) per year during 2009-2015 period as it has adopted measures to improve energy efficiency, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) said Monday.
During that period, more than 2,800 factories received assistance from the ministry to become more energy efficient, saving a total of 533.000 kiloliters in oil equivalent and 1.27 billion kilowatts per hour each year, the ministry said.
The lower energy consumption helped these manufacturers cut costs by NT$8.55 billion a year and reduce carbon emissions by 1.64 million metric tons annually during that period, the MOEA said.
Under a seven year span, the MOEA’s Industrial Development Bureau provided wide-ranging assistance to more than 2,800 firms, helping them to upgrade production equipment, streamline production processes, learn how to better recycle waste energy, and source alternative fuel, the MOEA said.
After a diagnostic period, the bureau came up with about 9,500 solutions over seven years to help manufacturers not only cut costs by becoming more energy efficient, but also lower carbon emissions, paving the way for an eco-friendly environment in Taiwan, the ministry said.
For example, it said, a local bicycle frame manufacturer has reduced its electricity consumption by adopting the use of digital-power meters and a computerized monitoring system, the MOEA said.
In addition, the company also replaced its production equipment with more energy efficient machinery, all of which have resulted in a savings of NT$6.5 million per year in electricity costs and a 605 metric ton reduction in carbon emissions annually, on average, over the period 2009-2015, the ministry said.
